Funding issues are one of the common causes of delays in road construction projects in Florida and across the U.S., largely due to the tremendous project costs. Research indicates that the U.S. spends significantly more on road construction compared to other high-income countries. The article attributes high project expenses with reduced staffing at state Departments of Transportation leading to greater dependence on costly consultants. Additionally, a lack of competition among contractors with fewer firms bidding worsens the problem. Florida’s Department of Transportation (the FDOT) is proactive in conducting road studies to improve the infrastructure of our communities. However, due to the high costs of funding and a limited budget, certain road projects must be prioritized, causing others to get behind schedule.
